Hi! Let’s be friends!

My name is Désirée— I’m a prairie poet, painter, and social worker who is currently completing a master’s degree! I live on a fourth generation family farm, outside of Manitoba’s main city Winnipeg. When the pandemic struck, I came home from the West Coast and moved into my grandparent’s farmhouse. It had been vacant for almost ten years! At the beginning, it had no hot water, a leaky roof, squirrels living under the bathtub, bees in the wall, and birds in the attic. Slowly, but surely, it has become home.

I’m currently working on a manuscript of poetry Sand on the Staircase about the experiences of moving home.

Some fun facts about me.

I think the most important thing to share first is that I believe in creating safe spaces for people to show up as their unique, kind, beautiful selves. I’m a cup half-full type of girl, who treasures time reading, writing, painting with my cat Tofino.

What else?

●︎ My favourite flavour of icecream is Neapolitan.
● I love the dressing in fun, colourful outfits that I sew.
● I don’t drink coffee.
● Almost every trip I’ve ever taken has been to an ocean.
● I’m in love with bird-watching.
● Some of my best friends started as penpals.

What you will find here:

Writing Workshops: I believe that anyone who writes is a writer! Sometimes writing can be a bit lonely, so I offer a wide variety of generative writing workshops that are held virtually. Let’s get together & write some beautiful words.

Snail Mail Poetry: I have started a snail mail poetry subscription, where for a small cost you will receive a monthly zine featuring a poem and sketches. Why? Because we all could use a little more happy mail in this world!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do You Take Commissions?

Sometimes! Previously, I completed a lot of custom, commissioned art pieces. Those who have been following along for a while will remember my days of painting 100’s of tiny art (3×3 inch paintings) that were collected worldwide.

However, at this time, I’m pursuing some BIG creative projects, so have decided to no longer primarily focus on commissioned work. Occasionally, I may release a limited number of commissioned slots, so be sure to sign up for my newsletter to stay in the loop!

Do you still teach art?

I really love teaching art and have experience leading art lessons for children through to adults for both watercolours and acrylic painting. If you’re interested in facilitating arts-based workshops, send me an email and we can discuss rates!
